Oh this one works--from the cover (although it's supposed to be multi-tatted bad boy Carter, he has no tatts) to the opening sequences in which we are introduced to him, and sweet, smaller, adorable and somewhat clumsy Marco.That Marco is a civilian in a world where many of his best friends are military personnel at Fort Dale (several of whom are crucial to this book and had their own stories in other tomes) at least prepares him for the grumpy, chip-on-his-shoulder and very, very psychologically abused Carter.Indeed, Carter is a brilliantly drawn character and how he evolves with Marco to guide him along is a surprising twist to a plot that is here and there and sometimes a bit scratchy but still taut enough to keep you going.This is only the second of this series that I've read and I think I will pursue to others, as well as the companion series "Heroes of Port Dale" because in the end it made me smile. I was so happy Marco got his own book! I loved his character because He was so sweet and understanding during the while Dean/Sloane romance. To find out he falls for a grump almost identical to Sloane is to funny. Carter is a really good guy that cannot catch a break. Thankfully he meets Marco and our wonderful General Winter is always there to help our beaten down heros. This was a great book to close out the series. I must say I am very sad to see my Fort/Port Dale guys going away.
