Due Diligence gave me the two programmers second chance romance I've apparently always wanted. Fazil (bi), one of Sam's technical staff, goes with Eli to fix a company in Seattle. His high-school lover, Todd (gay), is (surprise!) working there as a programmer. Todd wants to reconnect, but first they have to deal with a TON of misconceptions and misunderstandings that broke them up in the first place. Most of that turns out to be Fazil's fault, and he has to work through his guilt while updating his view of his past relationship with Todd. I love how just because these two guys are older and have straightened out what happened, their issues don't just magically disappear. Fazil is still insecure, Todd is once again willing to just make a plan for their lives together, and somehow neither one of these very bright men consider (until way late in the game) Todd moving to Fazil's city instead of the other way around, even though Fazil's the one with the job he loves and Todd's company has -CONTENT WARNING- an extreme problem with homophobia and racism! But eventually Todd gets a clue and asks for help so they can straighten it out. Yay happy endings. (Diversity note: Fazil's family immigrated to the U.S. from Turkey.) Right off, I'll say that some of the subject matter really hit home for me as it reflected some of the causes of recent events in Orlando. There was racism, Islamaphobia and homophobia that had truly awful effects on the characters. Fazil and Todd were boyfriends in high school, with a very turbulent past. After 15 years without any contact, they're thrown together through work. Fazil, from Pittsburgh, is consulting at Todd's place of work in Seattle.I was very torn about rating this. I loved Takeover and Just Business, much of it for the BDSM kink but also the way the personal relationships were handled. Not so much here. I loved the writing, the Seattle descriptions and because I did not want to stop reading. That was in spite of my irritation with the characters and with the lack of communication issue driving the plot. But Eli was part of the story and we got glimpses of Sam and Justin. Anna Zabo's writing style is also excellent and well executed.Misunderstandings and lack of communication are excusable in high school. Now, 15 years later, Todd and Fazil find that they still love each other but Todd still hasn't overcome his inability to consider more than one option. Fazil spends too much time blaming himself for his actions in high school or their final breakup. He's very insecure in some ways, also somewhat understandable, because of bi-phobia, homophobia, and bullying over his looks and Muslim heritage. But he overcompensates by not asserting himself and communicating clearly with Todd. They do have lots and lots of sex. Some is pretty hot and mildly kinky.The other issue was the homophobia and racism at Todds workplace and unfair and inadequate disciplinary action from the employer. Eli and Fazil were the subject of racist remarks and a Quran was burned and left for Fazil. Fazil and Todd also face homophobic slurs. I couldn't figure out why Sam and Eli didn't have attorneys swarming their HR, but nothing really happened to the perpetrators. Then of course, there is ultimately "The Big Breakup". Because these guys don't really talk or listen enough. Annoying and overused plot device that I didn't expect from this author. I'll still read the next book though, in hopes Ms. Zabo's gets her mojo back.
