Ebook About
When a bookish codebreaker and a dashing spy are reunited in this steamy historical romance from the author of To Steal a Heart, their lives depend on their ability to resist temptation. But fate is a mistress who cannot be denied. . . England, 1815. In the war against France, Heloise Hampden is a high-value asset to the Crown. When she cracks the enemy’s most recent communication, French agents are sent to silence her. But it’s the agent assigned to protect Heloise who poses the greatest threat to her heart: William de l’Isle, Viscount Ravenwood. Heloise has quarreled with the man they call Raven since childhood, yet always maintained a chaste distance. She’s sure nothing will change, thanks to the disfiguring scar on her face.Nothing has changed. Raven still wonders how Hell-cat Hampden’s lithe body would feel pressed against his, but for the mission he must remind himself that the woman takes more pleasure in ancient languages than she does in seduction. His imprisonment six years ago broke him in a way that makes the prospect of love impossible—he’s a shadowed Hades pining for sun-kissed Persephone. Still, his heart beats like mad whenever he’s within ten paces of Heloise, and he’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe—even if that means taking her to Spain as an unwilling hostage. Protecting her from danger will be a challenge; protecting her from desire will be pure agony.Praise for K. C. Bateman’s books:“(To Steal A Heart) is rich with espionage and suspense. Multidimensional believable characters and fast-paced plotting propel the story to its moving conclusion.”— Publisher’s Weekly“The writing and characterization are superb, the romance is hot, snarky and tender and the hero is delicious. Kate Bateman's writing sparkles." -- USA Today bestselling author Laura Lee Guhrke"Dashing, daring, and deliciously romantic!" -- USA Today bestselling author Caroline Linden"Bateman's scintillating first Bow Street Bachelors Regency is full of intense emotions and dramatic twists. Future installments will be eagerly anticipated by Regency readers." -- Publishers Weekly (Starred Review for This Earl Of Mine)"A riveting new voice for Regency readers! Kate Bateman is now on my auto-buy list." -- Janna MacGregor, author of The Good, the Bad, and the Duke

Book A Raven's Heart (Secrets & Spies Book 2) Review :

I am new to this writer, and must admit, I chose this book due to the discount price. I am an avid reader of Regencies but have been really disappointed in the most recent ones I've run across on Kindle. There were times reading this that I felt I would have understood the characters better if I'd read the previous book first, so I may backtrack to that one. I'm not going to give a plot summary here, as other reviewers and Amazon have already provided one, so I'll just lay out my pros and cons. You may not want to read on if you don't like spoilers.PROS: Bateman has a fluent writing style that is a relief as I've encountered so many other books on Kindle that come across as first drafts, and I loved the many insightful references to ancient cultures. The hero, Raven, and heroine, Heloise (who goes by "Hellcat") have a humorous, feisty rapport and are pretty well fleshed out by the conclusion, although, again, I probably should have read the previous book first. This plot is action-heavy, more of an adventure than drawing-room romance, but I enjoyed it overall. There is a fair amount of violence, but the profanity is refreshingly low-key (no incessant "f-bombs"). I found the sex scenes steamy without being too graphic.CONS: This book is not free of the occasional misspelling or misused word, though it's not nearly as bad as other Kindle books out there (at least Bateman has a solid grasp of grammar and punctuation). There are also anachronisms in the dialog and plot that can detract at times. For example, during the early- to mid-1800s, in no way would it have been OK for Hellcat to spend weeks alone with Raven, even if he was close friends with her brother. The kidnapping scene made me cringe (did Raven really need to cuff and gag Hellcat? It's played for humor but hit a bit of a sour note). Raven's "alpha-ness" is overemphasized. As another example, when Hellcat resists him, he states without hesitation that her reputation is far less important than the life of a good man (hmm...glad it's so cut-and-dried!). Also, Hellcat's brother Richard seems weirdly OK when he finds out that, of course, Hellcat and Raven's relationship didn't remain chaste during the time they were away. Even though Hellcat and Raven have known each other since they were kids, and Hellcat has never wanted to marry, and the scars on her face and her wild spirit have made her less marriageable, no family would have turned a blind eye to these circumstances. Raven would have been forced to marry her at once once they returned home. Finally, the second ballroom scene. It's doubtful that Raven, as the host, would have gotten away with spirting Hellcat to his bedroom with all those guests around, and even less probable that they would have been able to spend the entire night together. (The Epilogue is cute, though.)At no time, though, was I so turned off that I wanted to stop reading this book completely. After the first several chapters, I was ready to give this book 3 stars, but after finishing it I have to say it's closer to 4. It entertained me more than it exasperated me, and that's saying a lot these days.
Unfortunately this book was not as good as the first novel, almost like it was written by a different author. While it did have a decent story, the Hero and Heroine irritated me to no end.Heloise is a code breaker, so she must have a brain somewhere although she showed little evidence of it in a lot of her actions. Knowing full well that she's being targeted and almost got killed once, she continuously defied Raven's order to stay inside her protected compound. So of course she got in trouble and Raven had to rescue her. To her credit, she realized her stupidity afterward and apologized, but what's the point of that if she ended up doing the exact stupid thing again? Seriously, there's nothing more irritating than a heroine who thinks she knows better than anyone and proceeds to get herself in trouble because she has no common sense.Raven, on the other hand, was having too grand a time in his pity party. You know, the "my soul is stained and I'm not worthy of you" pity party. Right up to the very end, good grief! When he finally came to his senses, the turning point was not believable at all! Then there's the same-old boring inner monologues: his fine physique, her beautiful body, his strong chest, you get my drift. That's pretty much what they think of each other from the first page, over and over again. Boring. And spy? What spy? There's nothing much about spying in the book other than a few lines of "Raven went to meet xyz for information".Can you tell how disappointed I am with this book?
